Our story

A walled park, two thousand mulberry trees and a name that stayed

Chelsea Park takes its name from a real place, a walled park on the north side of the King's Road with a short and remarkable history.

The silk garden

North of the King's Road lay Chelsea Park, a walled field of about forty acres that had once been part of Sir Thomas More's estate. In 1718 John Appletree's Raw Silk Company leased it, built a house for nursing silkworms and planted around two thousand mulberry trees, black and white, to make English silk.

1720s

Satin for a princess

For a few years the plan worked well enough for satin woven from Chelsea Park silk to be made for Caroline of Ansbach, Princess of Wales. By 1724 the venture had failed, and the park was later divided and built upon.

Today

What remains

The silk is gone, but the names are not: Chelsea Park Gardens and Mulberry Walk still mark the place, and old black mulberries grow in gardens nearby, some perhaps descended from the trees of 1718.

Chelsea Park

We took the name, and the mulberry leaf that fed the silkworms, for a company that prepares homes in Chelsea with the same patience: thread by thread, until the place feels like yours.

Sources: Morus Londinium, Chelsea's short lived silk farm; London Gardens Trust, Chelsea Park Gardens; Victoria County History of Middlesex, volume 12: Settlement and building from 1680 to 1865, Chelsea Park to Blacklands.

The mulberry leaf

Our mark is the leaf the silkworms fed on, drawn with its toothed edge and fine veins like threads. Our colour is the mulberry itself, and our lettering moves like silk.
